FERC News

Yesterday the future of 30 Thai children changed

Yesterday was an exciting day for Khun Phakphing. A day that could change her future. She came from her village in the Chiang Mai province to the Chiang Mai Provincial Hall, to interview for a FERC scholarship. Without this scholarship, she’ll have to quit school next month. Thanks to the generous support of numerous sponsors and donors, FERC can extend scholarships to 30 deserving students just like her. With this opportunity, they can continue their education, earn their diplomas, and confidently embrace a brighter tomorrow.
Phakphing and the other candidates were nominated by their schools. But they must also explain why they are eligible for a scholarship and what they will use it for. That is a serious and exciting matter for them. Fortunately, they are assisted by a teacher from their school.
When the new public school year starts in Thailand in May, 30 students who would normally be kept at home will start the last 3 years of their upper secondary education. A first step to a better future, as a dentist, a musician, a craftsman, a tour guide, or any other profession that otherwise would have been unattainable for them. You can help people like Phakphing by sponsoring them for those 3 school years, or by making a general donation.

Our organization operates solely on the dedication of our all-volunteer Board and Advisory Committee and the generosity of individuals like you who offer their support. Every donation, big or small, goes directly toward advancing the noble cause that FERC stands for. Your contribution truly makes a difference in the lives of those we serve!

Important info for our supporters in the US

The Give2Asia website is going through a transition to Myriad USA as a result of a joint endeavor between Give2Asia and the King Baudouin Foundation United States – KBFUS. This exciting development between these two organizations aims to improve their services and offerings to our network of Friends Fund partners worldwide.

Our fund page at Give2Asia will be automatically redirected to a new fund page at Myriad USA’s vendor platform on 30 January 2024: Our Give2Asia fund page will be automatically ported over to every.org, a third-party fundraising platform through Myriad USA that offers enhanced functionality like fundraising campaigns and additional giving methods. Donations made prior to this date will still go to our current G2A fund and then transferred over to the Myriad USA fund after 30 Jan. As always, we deeply appreciate your donations and direct sponsorship of students at this time and in the coming new year!

Further information regarding donating through the Myriad USA website will be forthcoming in February-March of next Year.

Donating much easier for Europeans now

The Thai banking system has quite a few aspects that are not so understandable to foreigners. As a result, transferring donations or sponsorship contributions to Thailand is often not that easy. And when it finally succeeds, the treasurer cannot see who the money came from. For FERC supporters in America and Australia, that problem has been solved for some time through our collaboration with Give2Asia.

Recently, it has also become a lot easier for residents of European countries that work with the IBAN number system to transfer a contribution. FERC now has a support foundation in Switzerland, with a Swiss bank account. Tis means that transfer to FERC is now no more complicated than a domestic deposit.

Donations now also tax deductable for Swiss tax payers

The new Swiss FERC Foundation has obtained the official charity status in Switzerland. This means that donations to FERC are deductable in Swiss income tax.

Please note that you have to make your donation to the new Swiss foundation (details up here). If you are used to donating to our Thai bank, be aware that these do not qualify for Swiss tax deduction.

New future starts for 30 students

As we say goodbye to 29 graduating students, we welcome the 30 students who have been selected for a FERC scholarship starting from May 2023. FERC now supports a total of 80 outstanding young people through the final 3 years of High School.

Students are selected after a rigorous application and interview process. Of the 30 new students, 8 receive a scholarship which is provided by a direct sponsorship.

Sponsorships are the bedrock of our long-term success as a foundation. Please see further information here.

All sponsored students graduated

We are proud that all 29 students who have been supported by a FERC scholarship have graduated High School and now turn the next page of their young lives. While details are not completed for all students (the university application and entrance process can be a long and complex one in Thailand) we are pleased that all will go on to study at post-secondary level. We wish them well, knowing that a FERC scholarship has made such a difference to their lives.

Fashion show supports FERC

On January 7th, 2023 137 Pillars House organised a Fashion Show. Chiang Mai based fashion designers that use Hilltribe fabrics as their common theme, had famous Thai models presenting their designs. An interesting mix of traditional and modern clothes were put on stage.

The FERC calender that was available for 300 Baht, had those designers and their models photographed at Elephant Nature Park by Alberto Cosi, Italian top photographer and honorary consul.

Khun Lek the owner and founder of the park was also present. The fabulous fashion show was followed by finger food and Prosecco, whilst a Chinese auction was held to raise more funds for FERC.

A Fundraising Extravaganza!

A Hollywood night. On December 3rd, 2022 FERC hosted a fundraising event at the 137 Pillars House. The theme was a night in Hollywood and it was a great success. FERC volunteer and ex Broadway actor Al Roberge was the emcee for the evening and the audience went wild when Anne Arrowsmith, dressed as Sally Bowls and Dorothy Engman dressed as Marylin Monroe appeared on stage with their performance.

The buffet was sponsored by the 137 Pillars house and the raffle prizes provided by Oasis Spa, Nakara Jardin, Le Meridien, Le Crystal, Elephant Parade and NK Bantawai were highly appreciated.
